The following obituary was published on March 20, 1939 in the Huntington Herald-Dispatch on page 4.

“ALLEN COWAN – Forty – seven years old, of the Seven Mile road near Milton, who was killed Saturday when the roof of a small coal mine caved in as he was digging coal for family use, will buried today in Barboursville cemetery following funeral services at 2 o’clock at the Cox’s Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. W. Cecil Shepherd officiating.  The body was removed from the Heck and Danford funeral home last night to the home of a sister, Mrs. Allie Hendrix, with whom he resided. Dr. F. X. Schuller, Cabell county coroner, reported that the death was accidental.”
