SLAVE CONTINUED TO LIVE AT THE PLANTATION
Mary Lacy, a slave at the Jenkins Plantation at Green Bottom,
continued to live with the Jenkins' family after the Civil War.
The plantation, which is located about 15 dmiles from
Huntington, had more than 50 slaves at its peak.
Mary looked after the children of Captain William
and Thomas Jenkins.
By 1870, Mary and her son, George, now a farm laborer,
along with former slave, Christine (12-years-old), and
John Page,Mary's three-year-old mulatto son, resided
in the white house-hold of James B. Bowlin where
Mary served as caretaker of Albert G. Jenkins' children.
Later, she served in the same position within the household
of Thomas Jefferson Jenkins, son of the late Captain
Jenkins, until his death in 1873.
Only after Thomas Jenkins passing did Mary leave
the Jenkinses with her family, stating she
"had seen too much death." She settled
elsewhere in the county.
