Peter Cline Buffington (1814-1875) was a surveyor, a merchant, a bridge builder and a quartermaster in the Cabell County unit of the Virginia Militia. He represented Cabell County in the Virginia General Assembly, was the first trustee of Marshall College (now University) and was the first president of the Bank of Huntington. In 1871, when the first election was conducted in rail tycoon Collis P. Huntongton's new town, Buffington was elected its first mayor. He served in the post for two years snd died the following year.
