Revolutionary War Soldier Married at 12
-------------------------------------------
-----------
Daniel Frederick Bakeman may have been the
last surviving
veteran for the War for American Independence. He was
married to Susan Brewer Bakeman on August 29, 1772. He
was 12 yearss old at the time of the Marriage. She was 14.
She died at age 105 on September 10, 1863.
At 91 years, 12
days, their marriage is the longest claimed on record. Daniel
and Susan are the only couple in the world reported to have reached
their 90th wedding anniversary. Daniel died just six
months before his 110th birthday.
On February 14, 1867, Congress passed a
special act which
granted a Revolutionary War pension to Bakeman. The act was
required because Bakeman could not prove that he had served
in New York.
Daniel is buried in the town of Freedom.
