Buffington Was First School

Huntington's first school opened in 1872 to meet the needs of a
growing population. One year after incorporation, the
Buffington School opened its doors on 4th Avenue.

Buffington School occupied the area around the present court
house and city hall, and operated until a new school was built
in 1897 on 6th Street and 5th Avenue.

At that time, the city of Huntington took over the former school
building and used it as a hospital.
