James Cox fought in the Virginia Line

James Cox, early of Buckingham. Virginia,
was born
in 1755 and died in 1840. He is buried at Yatesmont
Cemetery located off of Howwll Mills Road in Ona.
He was in Joseph Crockett's regiment, the
Virginia
State Line. Cox served in the Illinots Expedition
under Crockett from 1776 - 1779.
Cox came to Cabell County about 1803 and
settled
on Mud River near the Great Falls (Blue Sulphur
and Ona). he was one of the first settlers on Mud River.
He was the ancestor of various Cox, Herndon,
DeFore and
Hereford families of this section.
