Mob Hangs Barboursville Man
( January 22, 1876 )

-------------------------------------------------------------

On January 22, 1876, Ed Willams was hung by a vigilante mob
outside the old Cabell County Courthouse and jail in
Barboursville.

He had killed a nearby farmer named Charles Meehlimg, having
conspired with the farmer's wife, Matilda, his secret love.

Matilda was also taken out to be hung, but no man would put
the rope around her neck. She was placed back in jail.

She later died in the old West Virginia Penitentiary at
Moundsville.
