Guyandotte Monument Dedicated In 1929
-------------------------------------------------------------
----------
A monument to the heroes of 1776 was
dedicated
at the Guyandotte Cemetery in the fall of 1929.
According to a story in The
Herald-Advertiser,
the monument was designed by John G. McColm.
It is an imposing shaft of gray
granite, eight feet
high, three feet wide and 18 inches thick.
The bronze tablet at the base bears this inscription.
Erected October 19, 1929, on the anniversary
of the
surrender of Yorktown by the Cabell County Court
under auspices of D.A.R. and S.A.R. to commenorate
the soldiers of the Revolutionary War who lie buried
here and elsewhere in Cabell County and whose
achievements are the priceless heritage of the
American people.
At the top of the shaft are two small bronze
insignias of the Sons and Daughters of the
American Revolution.
The monument is simple, yet impressive in
design, carrying out the colonial effect.
