Rebel Spy Nancy Hart

-------------------------------------------------------------

According to tradition, Hart led a Confederate raid on the
Union position at Summersville on July 25, 1862. She was only
in her late teen at the time.

She worked closely with the Confederate Moccasin Rangers as
a scout and spy. Hart was captered on two occasions and
escaped. After killing a guard and escaping at Summersville,
she returned a week later with 200 Confederate troops to
capture the town.

After the war ended, her husband, Joshua Douglas, returned
from Confederate service and settled in Greenbrier County.
Hart died in 1902 at about 60 and is buried at Mannings Knob
in Greenbrier County.
