General Witcher House In Gutandotte

His house was originally constructed in 1855, the
nine room Victorian Double I-house was occupied
by Union Civil War General John S. Witcher
in 1869.

Witcher, who also served in Congress, was born
in 1839 in what is now Lincoln County. He was
the son of Jeramiah and Mary Polly Thompson
Witcher of Hamlin.

He was Commissioned Lt. Colonel of the 3rd
West Virginia Cavalry on May 6, 1865. He
later was Brevetted Brigadier General of  the
U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865.

During his life, he was Cabell County Clerk,
a member of the West Virginia Legislature,
WV Secretary of State, Regent of the State
Normal School, and director of the C&O
Railroad. He is buried in Arlington Cemetery.
