Additional information furnished by Sheila Merriman.

The original name of the Turner Cemetery was Chapman (this was related to
me by my mother last night)....because a Chapman was the first buried there
(around 1812 is the first one we believe) and it was on the land of his father. The first 3 buried there were children. Later, after several years and burials, part of the land was sold or traded and in later years it became the Turner Cemetery at some point. There were no "traditional" headstones.
The first three people buried there are believed to be under the nearby driveway...where one parks now when visiting the cemetery. The Chapman, Butcher, Turner, Abbott, Adkins, Thornton, Childers and Burns families buried there are all relatives of our family. My mother and 2 aunts are looking to see if there is any kind of list left of our family members buried there. At one time my grandmother made such a list (back in the early 50s) but over time it seems to have been misplaced and no one seems to know  where it is or if it has survived. We know there are over 40 from our family alone and of those at least half of the graves are gone....I guess because they were marked only with a simple stone.   Several of the larger, more modern (1850 to present day) headstones are also gone. Aunt Dessie Chapman Burns stone has been consumed by a tree that great grandpa planted and my great grandparents stone, (the tall one by the trees) George Washington and Elizabeth Rachel Butcher Chapman, has had the top part broken off as well as other damage. At least 8 of the graves had stones marking them that when turned over you would see the name and dates etched into the rock. This was a common practice at one time that seems to be little known or at least forgotten today. There were only 3 of those left the last time I was back home 3 yrs. ago.

The following list was compiled by actual reading of the tombstones. All the information, excluding annotation, is written on the tombstone.
