Obituary
Judith
Ann Moberley Matthews
(September 29, 1933 - August 16, 2009)
On 16 Aug, 2009, Judith Ann Moberley Matthews,
eldest daughter of the late Toby Cremeans Moberley of Huntington and Auburn
Moberley of Dallas, Texas, completed her earthly adventure that started in
1933. Growing up in the Southeast Hills section of Huntington, she graduated
from Huntington East High School as an honor graduate and moved on to
Marshall College, where she was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. Before
completing her degree she went into the business world, becoming the
secretary to Cabell County Sheriff Bert Shroder for close to three years. In
1958, she married George D. Matthews, then a Lieutenant in the Army and
stationed in Berlin, Germany. While living in Germany, she was able to
explore Berlin before The Wall was constructed as well as many other sights
in and around the city. She also visited many other fascinating European
cities and countries such as Paris and Rome and Belgium and Holland.
Returning to the U.S. she and her husband, now blessed with two sons,
resided on several different Army Posts in the South, far West and mid-West.
With one more tour of duty in Europe thrown in for good measure, the family
was able to travel extensively, this time getting to visit Switzerland,
Italy and the Scandinavian countries. Through all of these adventures, home
and family were her main interests and joys. After the many military
travels, the family returned to West Virginia, settling in Teays Valley with
their two high school-aged sons, where band and basketball became a family
focus. Shortly thereafter, she returned to the business world as secretary
to the Comptroller of the Putnam County Board of Education, where she met
many wonderful people who would become life long friends. After this, she
worked as Executive Secretary to General Anesthesia Services, Inc. in
Charleston, WV, now with two sons in college just to make the adventure
interesting. In 1984, with their sons now grown, she and her husband moved
to Maryland (DC area) where they lived for the next 13 years. Her travels at
this point included many trips back to Huntington for family visits. After
George's retirement from the phone company, they moved back to the
Huntington area, residing in Rome Township just across the river in
Proctorville, OH, where she attended Johnson Memorial United Methodist
Church and was kept busy by her wonderful grandsons. A warm and loving
person, she thoroughly enjoyed meeting people and talking to them one on
one. Her favorite pastime was sending cards - and if she knew you, you would
receive a card on your special day or days. She is survived by her husband
of 51 years, George Matthews and two sons, Robert and wife Jenny and Steven
and wife Kim and four grandsons, Grant, Josh, Nathan and Alex - all of
Huntington, and her sister Sally Piepenbrink and husband Lee who reside in
Martinsburg, WV and their four children along with all their friends, who
affectionately knew her as "Aunt Judy". Her legacy as a wife, mother,
grandmother, sister, aunt and friend is one of deep love and genuine concern
and caring for others. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be at Chapman's Mortuary in Huntington on Tuesday, Aug 18,
2009 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. The funeral service will be held at Chapman's
Mortuary on Wednesday, Aug 19, 2009 at 2:00pm with Rev. John W. Lipphardt
officiating. Interment will follow at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in
Barboursville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
Alzheimer's Association, 1111 Lee Street East, Charleston, WV 25301.
