WEST JR. HIGH SCHOOL

A Story about West Jr. High School from the memories of Carolyn Sue Hysell Hall

1952 I was 7 years old.   I went to West Jr. High about 1957 through 1959.
I remember George's restaurant.  It was always  packed with kids at lunch
time.  I didn't have money to buy lunch, but  remember being able to buy a
hot dog and coke there a couple times.

Also, on the other side street from West Jr. High  was a restaurant called
the "Sugar Shack"...I never went inside the Sugar  Shack as it had a
reputation as a place where the more wild and free  kinda  kids went and ate and
smoked, etc.  I couldn't talk  anyone I knew into going there with me to check
it out...I didn't want  to go alone.  Besides I didn't have the money to
buy anything anyway.   I was just curious.      Music was always booming
loudly  from the Sugar Shack every day, and it was really loud and inviting.   I
remember hearing Jimmie Rogers song "Honey  Comb"  everyday...it was the
number one hit in  1957.   I do believe the Sugar Shack may have hurt Georges
little  restaurant business.

About 1962-63, the song Sugar Shack Song came out  and I think became a
number one hit--The Sugar Shack song reminded me of the  little "Sugar Shack"
restaurant across the street from West Jr. and the sound of  Jimmie Rogers
singing Honey Comb.

I don't know George's sauce recipe--but I believe  the sauce and the hot
dogs and the burgers served at Georges and  whatever was served at the Sugar
Shack were accompanied by a heightened  sense that belongs to the young
people of those bye-gone-days.

Great School...West Jr.  High.
