OLIVE JUANITA RATLIFF, 91, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013 at her home in Willow Wood, OH. She was born September 13, 1921, in Huntington, WV to the late Curtis Sherman and Garnett Edna (Goodman) Ratliff. Olive attended Marshall University and St. Mary’s School of Nursing, where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1944. After working for a time at the old Huntington Memorial Hospital, she volunteered for the U.S. Army where she was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. She was stationed with the 98th General Hospital of Neuro-Surgery in Munich, Germany and later transferred to a hospital in Tergensee, Germany. Following her Army tour, she returned to Huntington in 1948, where she studied at Marshall University and worked at the former C & O Hospital. Olive wanted to become a missionary nurse, so she enrolled at Vanderbilt University and obtained a BS degree in public nursing in 1951. During this time she also completed studies in religious education at Scaritte College in Nashville. In the fall of 1952, she was called to Taijon, South Korea, where she helped start “Baby Fold”, an orphanage for children under three who were on the verge of death from cold and disease. In 1957, she returned to Huntington where she worked at the C & O and later at St. Mary’s Hospitals. She was an active member of the Community of Grace United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the United Methodist Women, and was involved with church missionary work. She was an avid reader of mystery stories, and spent many hours reading and studying the Scriptures. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother Walter, special aunt and uncle Clint and Grace Gooderham Kearns, another special aunt, Peg Hensley, and many other family members. Survivors include her sister Mercedes Deskins of Traverse City, MI; four nephews, David (Peggy) Deskins of Huntington; Eddie Deskins of Indore, WV; Alex (Karen) Deskins of Pineville, WV; Earl Lee (Karen) Deskins of Crossville, TN; three nieces, Olive (Terry) Davis of Fairmount, IN; Jane Renwick of Upland, IN; and Anna (Robert) Gregorich of Lake Ann, MI; Special friends and caregivers Bill and June Adkins, of Willow Wood, OH; Dan and Rena Fulks of Chesapeake, Oh; along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1pm Wednesday at Beard Mortuary with Rev. Keith Leap officiating. Burial will be 10 am Thursday at Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point, OH with Rev. Steve Hemrick and Rev. Keith Leap officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8pm Tuesday at Beard Mortuary. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Community of Grace United Methodist Church, 228 28th St., Huntington, WV 25702.
