MARY SUE CLAY
(April 19, 1912 - September 27, 2013)



Mary Sue Clay, 101, formerly of Huntington, WV, passed away peacefully, Friday, September 27, 2013 in Ona, WV after a long, full, and beautiful life. She was born April 18th 1912 in Ashland, KY. The daughter of Frederick and Eva Elam Riggs. Sue was a graduate from Ashland High School and attended Cumberland College. She lived in Chicago for two years while working in the bond department of the U.S. Treasury. Upon returning to Ashland, she taught school and completed her education degree at Morehead State Teacher’s College. On the day of her graduation, August 3, 1940, she married her husband of 65 years, John P. Clay, Sr. She was a member of Delta Zi Delta Sorority, the Newcomers Club, The League of Women Voters, Beverly Hills Women’s Club, and the Woodbine Garden Club. She loved flowers and flower arranging, and served as a flower show judge. Her favorite activity by far was playing bridge and she was a member of several clubs. Into her 90’s, her card partners claimed she remembered every card played. Sue was a member of First United Methodist Church in Huntington. In addition to her husband, John, she was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Judith Lynn, and her eight siblings. They were Ruhama Payne McClellan, Daniel Ward Riggs, Grace Ruth Stiles, Emily Isabelle Perrson, Leah Mary Riggs, Evelyn Ann (Lanky) Smith, Samuel Hardin Riggs, and Harriet Elizabeth Scott. She was also predeceased by a daughter-in-law Betsy McEldowney Clay. Survivors include her son, John P. Clay (Roberta) of Max Meadows, Va., daughter Cathryn C Crawford (Bill) of West Columbia, S.C., three beloved grandchildren: Jennifer E. Clay, Louisville, Ky., W. Clay  Crawford (Holly), Summerville, S.C., and Peter J. Crawford, West Columbia, S.C. She is also survived by many treasured nieces and nephews , and special friend, Lynn Clay. Also surviving are step- grandchildren Stacey Watts-Smith, Dalton, Ga. And Hannah Ainsworth, Max Meadows, Va. Sue was a resident of Midland Meadows Senior Living and enjoyed many wonderful friendships there. The family would like to extend our appreciation to the Midland Meadows and Hospice of Huntington staff for their loving care. Special thanks to Amy, Tonia, Diana, Lily, Women of the Well and so many others for enriching these final years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Huntington, 1101 6th Avenue, Huntington WV 25701 or the charity of one’s choice. Funeral services will be conducted at 2PM on Monday, September 30, 2013 at Henson & Kitchen Mortuary, Barboursville ,WV with Pastor Kim Miller officiating.  Entombment will follow at Woodmere Abbey of Remembrance Mausoleum, Huntington. The Clay family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until service time on Monday at the funeral home.
