C. Gordon Emerson
(February 12, 1924 - February 11, 2012)



C. Gordon Emerson (87), left this planet on Saturday February 12, 2012 in Huntington, WV. He departed believing firmly and with confidence in John 3:16. He was born Feb. 12, 1924 in Huntington to the late B. Curtis and Goldyn McCoy Emerson. He graduated from Huntington High School, but interrupted his college education to volunteer for service in the U.S. Air Force. He crewed as a navigator on a B-24 in the South Pacific and just after World War II he was injured in an airplane crash in Japan and spent 2 years recovering at Walter Reed hospital in Washington DC. After his discharge he completed his education at Virginia Tech, earning degrees in both Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. He joined Huntington Alloys (International Nickel), retiring after 30 years of service. He is survived by his widow, Carolyn Childers Emerson, whom he married in 1950; by three sons, Scott (Pam); Larry (Adolia); and Mike (Christine); a sister and brother-in-law Helen Jean and Al Triplett; also by nine grandchildren; Joshua, Zachariah, Rachel, Jessica, Paul, Daniel, Alex, Chessa and Bria and 2 great grandchildren; Abigail and Noah. Gordon was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church, serving over fifty years in both Huntington WV and Fort Myers, Florida. He was actively involved in teaching young couples early on and in later years with kindergarteners where he was known as Mr. Gordon the Science Man. They enjoyed summer family vacations with 3 sons through the national Park System on a budget of $25/day including food, fuel & accommodations. In addition they participated actively in their sailing hobby for over 30 years. They returned to Huntington to live in the Woodlands Retirement community to be close to family and friends. Memorial service will be conducted at First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 1:30 p.m.. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers friends may send donations to Hospice of Huntington or to First Presbyterian Church, 1015 5th Avenue, 25701.
