Isabel Glazer Spindel

Isabel Glazer Spindel, 97, died on August 8, 2013 in Huntington, WV. She was born on March 18, 1916, in New York City to Nathan and Ida Glazer. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Murray Tayson Spindel, in 1964, by her brother Hal in 1983, and by her son-in-law, Stuart W. Thomas in 2003. She is survived by her son and daughter-in law, Dr. Robert and Barbara Spindel of Bellevue, WA, daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Michael Burnside of Missoula, MT, daughter Dr. Donna Spindel of Huntington, WV; grandchildren Jennifer Spindel of Kirkland, WA, Dr. Miranda Spindel of Fort Collins, CO; Dr. Matthew Burnside of Oakland, CA, Rachel Feldstein of Seattle, WA, and Megan Spindel Thomas of Milwaukee, WI; and great-grandchild, Samuel Feldstein of Seattle, WA. Isabel earned a BA in Music Education and MA in English from New York University. She taught for 25 years in the New York City public schools. She retired to Chapel Hill, North Carolina where she was a founder of the large and successful Shared Learning enterprise. In 2001 she moved to Huntington where she continued her love of learning by taking many classes in history and foreign language. She faced the ups of life with tremendous enthusiasm and the downs without bitterness. Throughout her long life she loved her opera and music, travel to every corner of the world, her books, politics, and good conversation. She showed in countless ways how the love for family, friends and for learning can lead to a long and happy life. The family thanks Dr. Cynthia Pinson and the staff of Woodlands Healthcare for their skilled and compassionate care. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 12, at 10:00 am at B'nai Sholom Congregation in Huntington. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the B'nai Sholom Congregation, Cabell County Public Library, or the charity of one's choice.
