PRIVATE MALCHOR STRUPE IN VIRGINIA MILITIA

Private Malchor Strupe enlisted in the 2nd. Battalion of the Virginia Militia in 1777
and served in the company of Captain Edward Lucas.  Strupe resided in what is
now Berkeley County during the Revolutionary War.  He lived there until his wife
Mary died.

In the early 1800's he moved with three of his four children to Cabell County.
When Strupe died there in 1833 at the age of 84, he was buried in the
Merritt Family Cemetery in Barboursville where his body reposed for
the next 166 years.

Because of the construction of the Western Regional Jail, the old
Merritt Family Cemetery of 57 graves had to be relocated.  A Site
near the jail was chosen so that the graves would stay on the old
Merritt homestead.
