For years, Roy Straight was legendary Marshall coach Cam
Henderson’s right-hand man. Straight was born in
Mannington, West Virginia, in 1911. He played
football for Henderson at Davis & Elkins
College in the early 1930s, then
became a football coach at
Clarksburg’s Victory
High School.
At Marshall, he was assistant football coach under Henderson
from 1937 to 1949. In 1947, when Marshall’s football team
received a berth in the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando,
Florida, and Henderson had also committed
the basketball team to play in the Las
Vegas Invitational Basketball Tournament,
Henderson went to Florida with the basketbal
team and Straight coached the football
team to a 7-0 loss to Catawba College.
Later, Straight took a job
as line coach at the University of
North Carolina for two seasons, then returned to
Huntington and joined the Cabell County
school system, first as a teacher and
later as an administrator.
He started his teaching
career at Huntington East High School.
From 1951 to 1953, he taught at Enslow Junior High School,
then returned the following school year to Huntington
East. A year later, he became principal at West
Junior High and served there until his
appointment as principal at Huntington
High in 1967, a post he held
until he retired in 1972.
Straight also served as a
local football and basketball
official and coached Little League baseball. He
was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall
of Fame in 1985. He died in Saint
Cloud, Florida, in 1986.
