Lawrence Ywelvington Peters
(February 8, 1942 - October 4, 2015)

Lawrence Y. Peters, 73, passed away early Sunday morning October 4, 2015 at Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. “Larry” was born at St. Mary’s Medical Center on February 8, 1942 and was raised here in Huntington. He was graduated from Douglass High School, then served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962 to 1966. His tour of duty was mostly throughout Southeast Asia, including Viet Nam. Larry received a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from West Virginia State University and two Masters Degrees in educational counseling from WVU. During his long professional career, he was a beloved colleague, teacher, counselor in an assortment of institutions, including Philadelphia Juvenile Correctional Facility and schools in Mansfield, OH, as well as in Montgomery, Huntington and Martinsburg, WV. A life-long sports fan, Larry’s warm and engaging personality won him legions of friends as he followed his teams and traveled about, always with a ready joke to share. He was preceded in death earlier this year by his beloved father, Lawrence L. Peters. He is survived by his mother, LaVeeta E. Peters of Belleville, MI, step mother; Vivian K. Peters of Huntington, sister; Vanessa A. Peters of Huntington, brother; Dr. Melvin T. (Sharon) Peters of Belleville, MI, nephew; Troy A. Peters (Anjanette Chan Tack) of Chicago, IL, niece; Shani V. Peters, nephew; Haile A. Peters of Harlem, NY; and his special friend, Belinda D. Woody of Norfolk, VA. He also leaves a host of young people he has mentored, including step children; Chris, Jeff, Chanel and Adam, Chris and Jeff Lane. A memorial service will be held at 1P.M., Thursday, October 8, 2015 at Ferrell-Chambers Funeral Home, preceded by a family visitation hour prior.
