Obituary

Joseph Howard Casey
(October 1, 1926 - April 3, 2015)



Joseph Howard Casey, 88, a resident of Woodlands Retirement Community of Huntington, died April 3, 2015. He was born October 4, 1926 in Charleston, West Virginia, the son of the late Reverend Nathan Lee and Lulu Madge Casey. Others preceding him in death were his brother Ernest Randolph Casey and his grandson, Jared Casey. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Martha Hoffner Casey, his son Thomas Randolph Casey (grandsons Sean and Chandler Casey), his daughter Margaret ‘Peg’ Louise Moss (granddaughters Rachel and Kathryn Moss) and his sister Virginia Lee Gleason.  Rev. Casey served in the United States’ Navy from 1944-1946 upon being accepted into the V-12 program. He completed his undergraduate work at Harvard University in 1948 and went on to earn a Master of Divinity at Duke University in 1951. He was an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1989. He served the following churches throughout West Virginia during his ministry: Lost Creek UMC/Johnstown UMC (Lost Creek Circuit), St. Paul’s UMC (Clarksburg), Wesley UMC (Kingwood), First UMC (Weston), Nighbert Memorial UMC (Logan), Christ UMC (Wheeling), Christ UMC (Parkersburg), St. Peter’s UMC (St. Albans). Joseph and Martha retired to Salisbury, North Carolina where they enjoyed traveling to Elderhostels, the beach, state parks and abroad with family and friends. They returned to West Virginia in 2008 to be closer to their children.
