ObituaryDr. Lander Lowell Beal
The Reverend Doctor Lander Lowell Beal died peacefully in his sleep June 6, 2016 at Woodlands Retirement Community. Lander was born October 26, 1927 in Catawba County, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Bertie Beal; his first wife, Sue Beckwith Beal; his daughter, Laura Lee Beal Tebbetts; and his six sisters, Mozelle Eubanks, Rose Brown, Aline Farris, Muriel Nanney, Joyce Long and Becky Mauney and two brothers, Daniel Clyde Beal and Earl Beal. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Cynthia Cunningham Beal; two daughters, Anne Tebbetts (Bob) and Sarah Beal and one son, John Beal (Alicia). Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Jane Beckwith Montsinger and Louise Beal; nine grandchildren, Wesley Tebbetts (Lisa), Ginnie Lovette (Josh), Chris Oyster, Emily Martorelli (Joe), Lauren Tebbetts, and Catherine, Eli, John Adam and Nathaniel Beal; four great-grandchildren, Ethen and Ian Tebbetts and Lillie and Izzie Lovette and many nieces and nephews whom he loved. Lander completed graduate and post-graduate studies at High Point College, Brevard College, Duke University, Emory University and Methodist Theological School in Ohio. He was a retired minister of the United Methodist Church. He served as campus pastor at Marshall University and helped coordinate the work of nine denominations to build the Campus Christian Center. He served pastorates at Johnson Memorial UMC, First UMC, Cross Roads UMC in Huntington, WV. In Nashville, TN he was coordinator of young adult ministries for the General Board of Education of the United Methodist Church. After retirement from full-time ministry, he served as chaplain at the VA Medical Center and worked with the alcohol treatment program. Throughout his ministry Lander touched many lives and helped many people through difficult times. He was also active in the community where he served on the boards of CONTACT, Hospice and Southwest Community Action. He was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club. Lander enjoyed gardening, fishing with friends, camping, telling ghost stories around the campfire, leading youth retreats and organizing bus tours. His was a life well-lived. He will be remembered for his strength of character, his sense of humor and his smile—always a smile! A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2016 with visitation one hour prior to the service at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Conner and Rev. Steve Hensley officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1124 Fifth Ave, Huntington, WV 25701 or the Campus Christian Center, One John Marshall Drive, Huntington, WV 25755.
