Obituary

VIRGINIA CORSON RIGGALL died March 4, 2013, having embraced life fully throughout her 98 years as the center of a family that so dearly loved, admired and received inspiration from her great spirit. Her path to Huntington began on April 27, 1914, in Creede, Colorado, and took her as a young girl to Florida. As a young woman, she worked in the office of J. Edgar Hoover and was dispatched on an assignment to Huntington. Being enamored with the friendly people of Huntington, she requested a transfer and met her future, beloved husband, Bill Riggall. After an interesting career with the federal government and working with two sheriffs in Huntington, retirement opened a whole new chapter of her life. That included service to others, travel and other adventures, including several trips to Australia and New Zealand, trips to Europe including Scotland, Italy, France and Liechtenstein, cruises, a hot air balloon ride and a cross-country drive to Alaska with her sister Patricia when Virginia was in her eighties. Always mindful of those less fortunate and less mobile than she, Virginia was an asset to those in the community, especially in her work with Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers, assisting the elderly with transportation, shopping assistance or household chores. Virginia was a devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Huntington since 1954 and her deep faith further drove her zeal for service to others and joy in living.  The true joy in Virginia’s life was her sons and their families. She noted each milestone and birthday of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately knew her as “Gin” and “Gigi” respectively. Every academic achievement, sports endeavor or career accomplishment was a source a pride for Virginia but more than that, she took pleasure in the happiness of those she loved so well. Virginia Riggall is survived by two sons, Frank Riggall, M.D., and wife Cynthia Riggall of Longwood, Florida; Bill Riggall and wife Marti Riggall of Charleston, West Virginia; grandchildren Todd Riggall and wife Maggie Riggall and their children Dylan, Caroline and Maxwell, Naples, Florida; Heather Duque and husband Greg Duque, Gainesville, Florida, and their children, Lena and Alex; Nathaniel Redmond and wife Heather Redmond, Naples, Florida and their children, Landon and Gaige; Shaina Riggall and Clifford Starcher, Charleston, West Virginia and their daughter, Ameera; Korin Parsons and husband Tony Parsons, Charleston, West Virginia; Todd Long and wife Stephanie Long, Ellicott City, Maryland whose son’s impending birth in early May was highly anticipated by Gin. Virginia is also survived by two sisters, Patricia Stevens of Cabin John, Maryland, and Carolyn Miller of Little Rock, Arkansas. She was pre-deceased by another sister, Janet Lepson of New York City. Virginia also considered close friends Sallie and Bill Gibson of Roswell, Georgia, as part of the family.  A memorial service celebrating the life of Virginia Corson Riggall will be held Thursday, March 7, at 2:00pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, 520 11th Street, Huntington, West Virginia, 25701. Visitors will be received 30 minutes prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Virginia’s name to Trinity Episcopal Church or to the charity of one’s choice. Beard Mortuary is assisting the family.
