H. THOMAS McCRAY, 82, of Huntington, husband of Marion Freeman McCray, passed away on Sunday at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was born on February 11, 1931 in Parkersburg, WV, a son of the late Harlan McCray and Ruth Wigal. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a nephew, Eddie McCray. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Jan Venoy of Atlanta, GA, Jenny (Dave) Walton of Huntington, and Paula (Gerry) Siciliano of Chattanooga, TN; his brother, Ned McCray (Sharolyn) of Proctorville, OH, grandchildren, Allison, Andrea, Christina, Kathleen, and Jonathan; great-grandchildren, Grayson and Sebastian, nephews Andy of Ashville, NC and Mike (Danielle) of Proctorville; great nephews Dakota and Bryan; and great niece Sophia of Proctorville, OH. Tom grew up in Parkersburg, WV, graduated from Parkersburg High School and attended Mountain State College in Parkersburg; La Salle Extension University, George Peabody College and various computer programming schools. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. He started his career as Supervisor of the auditors for the WV State Tax Department. He then spent five years as Executive Director of the State Board of School Finance in Charleston, WV prior to his appointment as Cabell County Schools Comptroller/Treasurer starting in June of 1966 and retiring in 1989. Tom has been a faithful member of Highlawn Presbyterian Church since 1973. He served as a Trustee and an Elder. Tom was actively involved over the years with the Toys for Tots, Huntington Food Pantry as Treasurer, served as President of WV Association of School Business Officials, Member of the Association of School Board Officials of the U.S. and Canada, he was a charter member of the WV State Association and has served on the Universal Federal Credit Union Board over the past 46 years, having also served as President. Our family has been very blessed to have Denny Thompson, Clara Alice and Todd, Katie, Ashley, Paxton, Lakin and Kitty in our lives. Tom loved and always recognized them as part of his family. A special thank you to Heidi, Brenda, Cindy, Tammie, Melissa, Rebecca, Tanya and Lisa from the Cabell Huntington Home Health Care for their faithful and compassionate care. Our appreciation to the staff of Rose Terrace for the support and encouragement they gave to Tom and his family. Thank you Jackie James from St. Mary’s Hospital for always bringing a smile to Tom’s face to brighten his spirits. Our heartfelt love and gratitude to Carolyn Gendron for her constant care and support during Tom’s illness. We consider her one of “God’s special angels”. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 6:00 pm at Highlawn Presbyterian Church with Pastors R. Jackson Haga and Rick Wilson officiating; visitation will follow the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Beard Mortuary is assisting the family.
