Obituary

Mr. Donald E. Dailey, age 76, passes away on Saturday afternoon, December 22, 2007 at his home on Amelia Island, Fl. Born in Barboursville, WV, Mr. Dailey was raised in Milton, WV attended public school there and graduated from Milton High School where he excelled in football. Because his sports abilities, he was sought after by five leading universities at the time of his high school graduation. He attended Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA on a football scholarship and in later years attended Marshall University in Huntington. During the Korean Conflict, Mr. Dailey joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for four years. In 1955 he received an Honorable Discharge. Mr. Dailey  continued his Civil Service career with the West Virginia State Department of Veteran's Affairs. After 10 years, he was promoted and transitioned to the Federal level with the United States Department of Veteran's Affairs Regional Office in Huntington, WV, where he remained as a Hearing Officer until his retirement, in 1995 with 40 years  total service. Mr. Dailey was a member of the Catholic Church of the Ascension, Hurricane, WV where he had served on the Parrish Council and actually helped clear the land where the church was erected. He was also a member of the American Legion.  Preceding him in death, are his parents, Emett and Mary Luellen Dailey, a brother, Basil Dailey, and 5 sisters, Thelma McComas, Maxine White, Helen Meadows, Elsie Jenkins, and Evelyn Jenkins. He leaves behind, his wife of 52 years, Jean Dailey, Amelia Island, Fl, their children, Gregory Alan Dailey and his wife Shelia, Huntington, WV, Deborah Smith Johnson and her husband Westley, Amelia Island, Fl, grandchildren, Jayson B. Smith, Hilton Head Island, SC, Samatha J. Dailey, Charleston, WV and Franklin E. Dailey, Morgantown, WV, numerous nieces, nephews, and many loving family members of the Gay, Morrison, and Hodges families. A very special thanks to Community Hospice of NE Florida. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 28, 2007, at the Catholic Church of the Ascension, Hurricane, WV with Reverend Laurence Wrenn, officiating. Interment will follow in Valley View Memorial Park. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 139. Mr. Dailey's family invites guests and friends to visit from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Heck Funeral Home, Milton, WV.
