Ruby Lycans Smith Caldwell
(March 12, 1921 - February 3, 2011)



Ruby Lycans Smith Caldwell our loving mother and grandmother made heaven her home on February 3rd at Kings Daughters Medical Center.  A celebration of Rubys life will be conducted at Reger Funeral Home Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 12:30 pm by Pastor Kim Stone and Pastor Mike Blankenship. Burial will follow at Docks Creek Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 10:30 am until service time Saturday at the funeral home.  Ruby was born March 12, 1921 the daughter of the late Andrew and Martha Johnson Lycans.  Surviving Ruby are her twin daughters; Martha (Joe) McNeal and Marcella (Jim) Canterbury and son: George Michael (Doris) Smith.  Grandchildren: Dr. Beth (Todd) Addington, Michele (Luke) Blatt, Amy (Paul) Herrick, Roger (Kristee) Holmes, Jennifer (Kenny) Compton, Eric Canterbury, Ten great grandchildren who brought her much joy; Jonathan Blatt, Katie and Carrie Herrick, Emma Blatt, Lindsay and Mathew Holmes, Kenna Compton, Hunter and Ethan Canterbury, Ardan George Addington, A loving niece and nephew; Lula Mae and Lacy Stone, three sisters; Louise Cronan, Lareda (Kenneth) Mills and Deloris Duke. Special thanks to moms caregiver, Erma Beam for her love and care and to Mary June Shannon her Sunday School Teacher who was so faithful to visit.  Preceding Ruby in death the father of her children George Smith, second husband John Caldwell, a cherished son in law; Roger Holmes, brothers; Herman and Andy Lycans Jr., sisters Juanita Bond and Myrtle Sloan and a special aunt, Mary Lycans Ellis.  Our precious mother attended Kenova Elementary and Ceredo-Kenova High School. Before retirement she was employed by Wayne County Schools cooking at Ferndale Elementary and Kenova Elementary.  Ruby was always actively involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren.  Mom had be a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church in Catlettsburg, Ky. For 60 years. She was saved at an early age and baptized in the Ohio River by Dr. B. R. Lakin. She served her Lord faithfully through His church until ill health prevented her, but always was a true witness to her family and friends.  Ruby graciously took into her home 3 of her aunts and an uncle in their later years and cared for them.  Our dear mother has been a tremendous blessing and an inspiration to her children, grandchildren, and her great grandchildren.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Good Samaritan Center in Kenova, WV.  Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
