Helen Ivalene Hitchings
(January 30, 1930 - December 18, 2020)



Helen Ferrell Hitchings, 90, of Huntington, WV, widow of Franklin B. Hitchings, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020 at her residence. A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 11:00 am at White Chapel Mausoleum by Pastor Dustin McCune. Entombment will follow. After college, Helen was a secretary for Island Creek Coal Company and later, with her husband, she was a co-owner of Hitchings Food Market in the west end of Huntington. She was a pianist at Central United Methodist Church for over 50 years and organist for 3 years as well as a pianist at Cross Roads United Methodist Church. Born on January 30, 1930 in Huntington, WV, she was the daughter of the late O. A. and Bertha Bumgardner Ferrell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Eloise Malcolm Perry. Survivors include her son Fred Andrew (Janet) Hitchings, and her two daughters, Ruthie Marie (Dick) Lucas and Margaret B. Carson. She helped raise a special grandson, Derek Andrew Carson. She has five grandchildren in total and several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Stephen Wesley (Janet) Ferrell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cross Roads United Methodist Church or Hospice of Huntington. The family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice especially nurse: Jennifer and CCCSO's Alicia, Terra, and Jackie. There will be no visitation.
