Carl E. Bechdolt, 91, of Winston-Salem, NC, formerly of Huntington, WV, went to be with the Lord on July 25, 2011. He was born April 18, 1920 in Huntington, WV, the son of the late Paul and Kathryn Bechdolt. On March 17, 1945, he married the love of his life, Virginia Gartin of Ranger, WV, who survives. He served in U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in Norfolk, Va. After his discharge, he was employed by Sylvania Electric, as a machinist. He graduated from Marshall University, College of Engineering, in May 1960. Upon graduation, he was employed by IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. After 4 years, he returned to Huntington, and was employed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, as a hydraulic engineer, for 25 years, retiring in 1986. He was preceded in death by daughter, Deborah Bechdolt Cheetham and granddaughter Elizabeth Carson. He is survived by daughter Donna Bechdolt Gibson, of Huntington, WV; son David Bechdolt, of Winston-Salem, NC at home. Six grandchildren Mandie and Chris Metzger, of Kingsport, TN; Cynthia Carson, of Huntington, WV; Randy and Johnna Cheetham, of Huntington, WV; Martha and Andy McKenna, of Lewisville, NC; Rick Cheetham, of Lewisville, NC; Chris and Karen Carson, of Huntington, WV; Eleven great-grandchildren: Tim, Adam, and Laura Metzger; Alex Kinsey; Ella Jon Cheetham; Molly and Ian McKenna; Cody and Corie Cheetham; Beau Thomas and Sophia Carson.
He was a member of Highlawn Presbyterian Church. He will be remembered fondly by family and friends as man of great humor who loved his family, as well as a lifetime devoted fan of Marshall's Thundering Herd and the Cincinnati Reds. He was a creator of funny stories and silly songs that he shared with those he loved. Family will receive friends at Beard Mortuary in Huntington, WV on Saturday, July 30, 2011 from 6:00 pm to 8:00pm. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at 2:00 at Beard Mortuary with interment at Ridgelawn Memorial Park. Pallbears: Chris Metzger, Randy Cheetham, Andy McKenna, Chris Carson, Tim Metzger, and Adam Metzger. Honorary pallbearers: David Bechdolt, Rick Cheetham, Cody Cheetham, and Alex Kinsey.
