John Kelly Morris, 76, of Culloden, formerly of Bluefield, Va., died Monday, March 10, of a long illness and surrounded by his family. Born Aug. 6, 1937, in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was the son of the late John Franklin Morris and Perry Lee Kelly. He was a graduate of UT-Chattanooga and a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. A member of the ROTC in college, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and served in the infantry at Fort Benning, Ga., and Fort Knox, Ky. He eventually rose to the rank of captain in the U.S. Army Reserve. Following his military service, he was employed 39 years in the cement industry, mostly in the Southeast. He was a member of the Contractors Association, the Builders Supply Association and of the Cement Analysis Testing Agency. He was also named Salesman of the Year several times. He was a member of the Lions Club in Bluefield, Va., and elected Deputy District Governor. After being transferred to the Huntington-Charleston area, he became a member of the Milton Rotary Club, where he was Scholarship Chairman. In addition, he was chairman of the Cabell County Republican Executive Committee for 18 years. In 2004, he met President George W. Bush and escorted him through Cabell County. He was named a Cabell County Distinguished Citizen, was a longtime member of Guyan Golf and Country Club and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of the Milton Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and was “Santa Claus” at the annual Christmas party for decades. He also attended St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Ona. Prior, he was Sunday school superintendent at the Fincastle Presbyterian Church in Bluefield, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Franklin Morris, in 2010. Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Lotito Morris, of Culloden; brother William C. Morris and wife Elma of Sharon, Conn.; sons, Anthony (Tony) Morris and fiancé Patty Compton of Bluefield, W.Va.; Chris Morris and wife Tonya of Roanoke, Va.; brother-in-law Tony Lotito and his wife Rosie of Claypool Hill, Va.; daughter-in-law Karen Morris of York, S.C.; grandchildren Brittany Leigh Naumann and husband Erich of Huntington; John Christopher Morris of Covington, Ky.; William Linow and Sara Jean Morris of York, S.C.; great grandchildren Christian and Carter Naumann of Huntington and several nieces and nephews. All of whom he loved and cherished. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Beard Mortuary in Huntington, followed by a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. On Saturday, the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Bluefield, W.Va., followed by a memorial service.
