Obituary
B. E. “Bob” Adkins,
85 a lifelong resident of Huntington, WV passed away on Friday April 10,
2015. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Beard
Mortuary with Rev. Bill DeMoss officiating. Inurnment will follow in
Woodmere Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from noon until
service time. He was born May 14, 1929 in Huntington, WV the son of the late
Norman and Beulah Hayes Adkins. In addition to his parents he was preceded
in death by his wife of 61 years, Lorna Pearson Adkins and a sister Norma
Rowsey. He graduated from Huntington East High School in 1947, where he
played football, basketball, baseball, and ran track all with his precious
sister Norma Belle by his side. He then attended the Greenbrier Military
Academy on a football scholarship. His love of sports continued as he became
active in the church softball league, serving as President for many years.
He was a member of Cross Roads United Methodist Church. He was devoted to
his wife and daughters. He sacrificed promotions in his career, to keep him
and his family close to home. Eventually, he became successful owning his
own business in the electrical field. Through many decades he loved going to
the YMCA. Eventually, he went on to represent West Virginia in the Senior
Olympics multiple times in the 3 on 3 basketball competition. He and his
“old croony buddies” even had their own following of supporters. Some of
Bob’s best memories were with his life-long friend, Larry Duncan and their
world travels. They were blessed to have traveled several times to Europe,
and also to Australia and China. They were truly two peas-in-a-pod. Bob
loved Marshall University and took pride in supporting “The Herd” by
purchasing basketball and football season tickets beginning in 1972. He
always felt that it didn’t matter if the team won or lost, you still needed
to support them. Bob was the most unselfish man you would ever meet. He
always had a smile and a joke. He lived by these words “only a life lived
for others, is a life worthwhile”. He is survived by his loving family, his
two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Mike Booten of Murfreesboro, TN and
Connie and John Priddy of Barboursville, WV; four grandsons who he always
had words of wisdom for and they loved him dearly, Brandon (April) Booten,
Adam (Lane) Booten, Alex (Rachel) Booten and Garrett Priddy; three great
grandchildren, Ben, Wells and Willa Kate Booten; brother-in-law, Johnny
Henderson of Cocoa, Fl.; two nieces, four nephews and a host of extended
family and friends. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Cross
Roads United Methodist Church.
