Obituary

Our beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, Sean Andrew Hammack, 27, of Huntington, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on Monday, October 19, 2015. Born March 31, 1988 in Huntington, he was a son of Dr. John and Anne Hammack. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Heather and William Esgro; brother and sister-in-law, Joshua and Heather Hammack; maternal grandmother, Calma Butler; paternal grandmother, Betty Hammack; nephew, Daniel Liam Esgro and niece, Aurora Grace Hammack, who were both very much adored by Sean; two godchildren; his beloved cat-daughter, Azmaria “Azzi” Zsa Zsa Hammack, and aunts, uncles, cousins, members of the Young Adults with Cancer support group, and a multitude of friends who all loved him and his spirit. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Lawrence Mackey Butler; paternal grandfather, Darald Ray Hammack and his uncle, Patrick Ray Hammack. Sean was a graduate of Saint Joseph Central Catholic High School and despite all odds, proudly attended the University of Notre Dame for several semesters. An avid tennis player, Sean also loved swimming, basketball and soccer; all of which he played competitively throughout his life. He enjoyed traveling to New York, Hawaii, going to concerts and attending the theater. Sean delighted in being at the beach which he considered his preferred place of healing. He volunteered much of his time toward assisting the American Cancer Society and tutoring students in Math at St. Joseph High School. He was active in Relay for Life, serving multiple times as the Relay's honorary chairman and as chairman of the local chapter's website, and frequently volunteered at the local branch of the American Cancer Society. Sean was the Co-Chair of the first Habitat of Humanity house that was built by cancer survivors in Huntington, the first of its kind in the country, and founded the St. Mary's Young Adult Support Group. He was truly passionate about building a support network for other young adult cancer patients. Through his strong faith in God, Sean fearlessly battled cancer for nearly ten years and frequently overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles and defeated impossible odds. He was an inspiration to his family and friends with his gentleness, goodness and faith. His personality enabled him to make friends effortlessly and he never met a stranger. He always put others' needs before his own, and demonstrated how to approach challenges with faith, determination, and a positive attitude. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, October 23, 2015 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Father Dean Borgmeyer, Monsignor Lawrence Luciana and Father Julian Marneni, officiating.
