Robert James Chenoweth, Jr.

Reverend Robert James Chenoweth,
Jr., age 87, of Barboursville entered eternal life May 21, 2014
at home. Jim was born February 20, 1927 the oldest of four sons of the Rev.
Robert James and Ola Edgell Chenoweth of Calhoun County. He was born in
Akron, Ohio where his parents lived temporarily. In addition to his parents,
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 61 years, Wilda Evon
Tenney Chenoweth; an infant great grandson, Graham Albert Noe; brother,
Asbury Webb Chenoweth and sister in-law, Lois Chenoweth. Jim is survived by
five children: Helen Evon (JR) Chapman of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mildred Ruth
(John) Aluise of Huntington, Roberta Jean (Ron) Ferguson of Kenova, Robert
James Chenoweth, III (Becky) of Barboursville and David Law Chenoweth of
Huntington; eight grandchildren: Dr. Karie Anne Barbour of Bridgewater, Va.,
Seth Alan Barbour of Troutman, N.C., Kory Allison (David) Noe of
Chattanooga, Tenn., Mendy Aluise (fiancé Jeff Chapman), John Michael Aluise,
Christopher Joseph (Sarah) Aluise of Huntington, Maggie Elizabeth Chenoweth
of Barboursville and Ronald Morgan Ferguson, Jr. of Kenova, as well as one
great grandson: Tate Owen Noe of Chattanooga, Tenn. Surviving siblings
include Joseph Benjamin (Hazel) Chenoweth, David Eugene (Connie) Chenoweth
and sister-in-law, Wanda Morgan Chenoweth. Additionally, he is survived by
in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved dearly; special friends,
Kent Barbour and Rick Knight; and a host of wonderful friends who blessed
and enriched his life and ministry. Jim graduated from South Charleston High
School in 1944. At the age of 18, he entered the ministry when appointed to
serve as the pastor at Grace Methodist Church in Charleston. He earned a
Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Morris Harvey College in 1948. In
1951, he earned the Master of Divinity Degree from Westminster Theological
Seminary in Westminster, Md. While in seminary, he served churches in
Pomeroy, Penn. and Hardy County, WVa. Following ordination, he was appointed
to the Methodist Church in Durbin, W.Va., where he met and married the love
of his life, Wilda Evon Tenney. During 43 years in active ministry in the
United Methodist Church, he also served at Wesley in Vienna (6 years),
Pineville (11 years), Highlawn in Huntington (9 years) and Nighbert Memorial
in Logan (8 years) before retiring in 1989. Jim preached thousands of
sermons during his years in the ministry, but will be remembered for the
sermons he lived. He demonstrated and taught God’s love by precept and
example daily. When diagnosed with serious illness, he exhibited the same
courageous spirit and unwavering faith practiced throughout his life. He was
a dedicated man of God, devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather,
beloved brother, avid sports enthusiast (gifted deer hunter, chess and ping
pong player) and active at Cross Roads United Methodist Church where he
enjoyed singing in the choir. The family extends sincere appreciation to the
wonderful staff and friends at Wyngate Senior Living Community, Hospice of
Huntington and to Pastors David Cartwright and Bill DeMoss for their
continued love and support. Memorial donations will be gratefully accepted
by Cross Roads United Methodist Church or Hospice. Friends will be received
from 6-8 p.m. at Chapman’s Mortuary Friday, May 23. Celebration of life
service will be at Cross Roads United Methodist Church Saturday, May 24, at
11 a.m. Burial at Spring Hill Cemetery following the service.
