Helen Pearl Giles Newman
(August 9, 1921 - May
9, 2014)
Helen Pearl Giles Newman
passed away at the age of 92 on May 9, 2014, surrounded by close family
members at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, WV. Known to
all her family and friends as “Pearl”, she was born August 9, 1921 near
Morgantown, WV to George James and Helen Penson Giles. Joining her brother,
Lawrence, she was raised on the family farm, enduring many hardships and
adversities including the death of her mother when she was only four years
old as well as the Great Depression. She attended the local one room
school-house until the eighth grade. In 1940, despite her diminutive size
and frame, she became a live-in housekeeper for Frank and Ida Gapen and
Ida’s sister Isae Luckey of Morgantown, WV, caring for the family as well as
occasional boarders, including all the cooking, cleaning and laundry. She
worked there for eleven years until she met and married Mrs. Gapen’s nephew,
Leonard Selby Newman, a widower with four grown and soon to be married
children ( the four “ J’s”: Joan, Jim, Janet and Jean). The four “ J’s” came
to know her as “ Mom.” They resided in Lewisburg, WV where Leonard worked
for the Soil Conservation Service and where they welcomed two more children,
Sandra Kay and Samuel Selby Newman. Relocating to Huntington, WV in 1964,
she resided in the same home for fifty years until her death. She was
a faithful member of the Beverly Hills United Methodist Church throughout
her life in Huntington, attending the Fellowship and subsequently John
Wesley Classes where she served as the Card Chairman. She is survived
by her children, Sandra Peck ( John) of Huntington, WV; Samuel Newman (
Christine) of Villa Hills, KY; grandchildren Kendra, Kylee and Collin Newman
and great grandchild Trevor also in Villa Hills; Leonard’s children, Jean
Osborne of Brooksville, FL, Janet Lawrence of Brandon, FL, James Newman of
Roanoke, VA; thirteen other grandchildren and innumerable great
grandchildren. Also surviving Pearl are nieces Gracella Cayton ( Roy) and
Marlene Summers ( Dennis) and nephew Larry Giles ( Kathy), all of
Morgantown, WV, where many grand-nephews and -nieces reside; niece Nancy
Moore ( Jesse) of Morgantown, nephew Brother Brian Newman, OFM-Cap, now in
Pittsburgh, PA after serving unceasingly as a missionary and educator in
Papua New Guinea for over fifty years, and grand nieces Dana Newman Cinelli
and Dawn Newman Bryant both near Baltimore, Maryland. Preceding Pearl
in death were her husband, Leonard; his daughter, Joan Gwinn formerly of
Pontiac, MI; and her brother, Lawrence Giles, formerly of Morgantown, WV.
She will be sadly missed by her family and church, her many current and
former neighbors, especially Claire and Terry Bias and their youngsters,
Levi and Samuel. Her family would like to extend a special gratitude to her
caregivers including Dr. Damian Silbermins; nurses Janet, Candice, Dixie,
Kim, and Rhonda as well as her outpatient Hospice team, Vickie, Marjorie and
Tina. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at
the Beverly Hills United Methodist Church, followed by a funeral service at
1:00 PM. A committal service will take place afterwards at nearby Woodmere
Cemetery. The Rev. William M. Haynes, Jr. will officiate. Chapman Mortuary
is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests
donations in her memory to Beverly Hills United Methodist Church and the
Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House.
