Robert Alton Clay, 54, of Hurricane, WV passed away on March 5, 2016. He was born in Ironton, Ohio on July 2, 1961, the first born, of Robert C. and Ann Riley Clay, of Ashland, KY. Robert leaves behind his beloved wife of 26 years, Angela Foutz Clay, and their three children, Robert Nathaniel, Nicholas Alton, and Riley Elizabeth Clay. In addition, Robert is survived by four siblings, Denise (Andrew) Curl of Lexington, KY, David (Andrea) Clay of Huntington, WV, Keith Clay of Ironton, OH, and Cindy Clay of Covington, KY, as well as, his mother-in-law, Nancy McGlothlin of Roanoke, VA, four brother-in-law's, Steve (Toni) Foutz, Dennis (Jackie) Foutz of Charlottesville, VA, Jay (Pat) Foutz of Roanoke, VA, Rick (Kym) Foutz of Lynchburg, VA, and a sister-in-law Teresa (Talmadge) Bratton of Roanoke, VA. He also leaves behind several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends who love him. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, C.A. and Vivian (Ma-Dee) Riley, and his paternal grandmother Edith Clay. Robert grew up in Ironton, Ohio, attending Ironton public schools and graduating from Ironton High School in 1979. A member of the "Fighting Tigers", he was a starting baseball pitcher and an offensive/ defensive tackle on the football team (#76). Although a standout in both sports, Robert received most of his accolades on the football field earning Honorable Mention in Ohio his Jr. year, and Co-player of the year (district) and 2nd team all-state his senior year. He also received the Robert E. Christian and Tiger Clan Scholarship Award upon graduation for both his athletic and academic performance. Robert received a full athletic scholarship to Miami of Ohio University where he played football for 2 years before incurring a career ending knee injury his sophomore year. He went on to graduate with honors with a Bachelors in Business Management/Marketing in 1983. Upon graduation, Robert returned to the Ashland/Huntington area to work in the family business Tri-State Oxygen, Inc. He met his wife Angela while running at Ritter Park and they married May 19, 1990. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family and was very passionate about sports in his own children's lives as he spent many years coaching baseball at League 3 in Huntington. Strong faith, love of family, and tireless devotion to the family business is what Robert imparted to his children, and last but not least, his lifelong love of the Pittsburgh Steelers. A celebration of life memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Huntington with visitation one hour before the service. The family invites everyone to join them from 3-5 in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House.
