Gertrude Hope (Faulkner) Spurlock, 84 of Huntington WV, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family, whom she loved dearly. Gertie's, service will be conducted by her pastor, J. Andrew Magnusson, on Sunday Dec 17th at 2:00pm at Chapman's Mortuary.  Gertie, was born May 13,1933, in Huntington WV, to the late Harry A. and Mildred J (Caswell) Faulkner. Gertie, attended Cabell County Public School graduating from Huntington East High School in 1951. While at East, she was the pianist for the high school Choir and played the violin in the orchestra. In 1950 and 1951, she was selected as a member of the WV All State Orchestra, were she was first chair both years. On July 30, 1947, at sixteen years of age she became the bride of William S. "Bill" Spurlock, they celebrated their 67th Anniversary in 2016. In 1955, Gertie, began working at CandP Telephone Co. here in Huntington, as a cashier. In 1957, she became a Service Representative in the business office. Gertie, also managed the phone store until she was promoted to a management position. While working at the telephone company, she joined the Telephone Co Pioneers. In 1981, she was elected President of the WV Chapter #42 of the Telephone Co Pioneers. For the next year she traveled the state of West Virginia, visiting other chapters of the organization, attending district and regional meetings. After her retirement from Verizon (formally CandP) in 1991, she joined the Pioneers Life Members Club and in 1997 was elected to the Life Members Council. Gertie, along with other members work diligently on their pioneer project the WV Handicap Jamboree, held at North Bend State Park in Cairo WV, children from all 50 states would gather and participate in various sporting events. In 1984, Gertrude and Bill became the owners of Bill Spurlock Dodge Inc. in downtown Huntington. In 2009, they changed their name to Bill Spurlock Auto Sales and Service Inc. Gertie, was very active in her community of Huntington as well, she was a 20 year plus member of the Marshall University Choral Union. She was a member of the Quota Club of Huntington, and served as President. She organized the Quota Club Clowns they participated at parades, hospital and other community events. Gertie, was a member of the Buford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Treasurer. In 1947, she became a member of Baptist Temple, though Baptism, after moving to South Point, Ohio with her family she became a charter member of Burlington Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School in the Children's Dept. along with becoming church pianist, director of both the Adult and Children's choirs and was President of the Southern Baptist Women's Missionary Society. In 1976, Gertie, retuned to Baptist Temple, as director of the Sanctuary Choir, she also became a Sunday School teacher in the Sunshine Patch (children's dept.) as well as director of the children's choir, director of their Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving Programs and various musicals that involved the adult choir with the children's dept., was director of Vacation Bible School for many years. In 2015, she became the church pianist until her retirement in the spring of 2016. Baptist Temple, honored her many years of service to God and Baptist Temple with a Proclamation. Gertie, was a very faithful and true servant of God, if something need to be done she did it, if something needed fixing she fixed it. She loved the Lord, and was is faithful servant throughout her life. Gertie, is preceded in death by her parents, her husband William S "Bill" Spurlock, one brother Charles N Faulkner, two sisters Eleanor R Goossen, Barbara E. Snyder and Great Grandson Wesley McGuffin. Those she leaves to mourn her passing are daughters Yvonne N, (Dana) Sargent, Amy Jo (Jim) Conley and a son Samuel L. (Christy) Spurlock, all of Huntington. Her Grandchildren Sarah Spurlock,of Huntington, Michael Stacy and Josh Reed, of South Point, OH, Nicholas, Alex (Lindsey) Ona WV, Abby and Sarah Grace Conley of Huntington. Brad Maynard, Huntington and Marc (Tessa) Maynard, Ironton OH. Samantha Spurlock of Morgantown WV and Owen Spurlock, of Huntington. Great Grandsons William and Samuel McGuffin, Huntington and Great- Great- Grandaughter Emily McGuffin of Barboursville. Nieces, Laura Powell, Huntington, Donna (Lloyd ) Brumfield of Hebron, Ky, Jennifer (David) Lilly of Johnson City TN, nephew Gary (Vicky) Snyder of Baltimore MD. One very special friend since grade school Charlotte (Hartley) and Husband Jack Crandall, Huntington. The Family would like to thank those who helped take care of Gertie, St. Mary's Home Health, Hospice of Huntington, Dr. Cari Burck and Dr. Tim DeEulis, for their wonderful, kind and tender care they gave. Visitation will be Saturday Dec.16 at Chapman's Mortuary from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
