Obituary
Gladys Washington GLADYS DOBEY WASHINGTON, was born on July 13, 1928 in Huntington, West Virginia to Clyde Dobey, Sr. and Anna Sue Dobey. On February 8, 2010 she was called home surrounded by her loving children. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she was director of the Vacation Bible School and a member of the Matrimonial Choir. Gladys attended Douglas High School and graduated in 1946. She received her BA Degree from Marshall University in 1976 and her Masters in Adult Basic Education in 1978. She was united in marriage to Nelson Leroy Washington on November 5, 1950 and to this union three children were born; Nelson Stanley Washington, Scheherazade Washington Childs, and Gerry Lee Washington. She was employed in the Action and OIC Poverty Programs in Huntington, Marshall University in the Office of Graduate Admissions and the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine. She was a devoted Mother, Grandmother, and mentor to several nieces, nephews and other youth in the community. She leaves to cherish her memory son, Rev. Nelson (Deborah) Washington, Columbus, OH; daughter, Scheherazade (Thomas) Washington Childs, Cincinnati, OH; son, Gerry Lee Washington, Cincinnati, OH; sister, Mary Collins of Huntington, WV; sister, Joanne Johnson of Columbus, OH; brother, Clyde (Charlie) Dobey, Jr, Huntington, WV; sister in law, Joan Washington, Columbus, OH; nieces, Rita Barksdale, Columbus, OH, Donna Kay Johnson , Huntington, WV, Victoria Ann Madison, Vallejo, CA; grandson, Aaron Washington Childs, Cincinnati, OH; granddaughters, Tamara Davis, Nakira Hopkins, Columbus, OH; great grandchildren, Jalen Hopkins, Christian Johnson, Jeremiah Hopkins, Soneya Hopkins all of Columbus, OH; dear friend Dorothy Morgan, Columbus, OH and a host of relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by husband Nelson Leroy Washington; mother, Anna Sue Dobey; father, Clyde Dobey, Sr., sister, Rosetta Burell; mother-in-law, Alverta Washington; father-in-law, Lee Roy Washington; brothers-in-law, Gilbert Collins, Glen Johnson and nephew, James Delane Medley. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00am Saturday February 13, 2010 at Ferrell-Chambers Funeral Home with Rev. David Lemming officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
