Obituary

Dominica Clair Ballengee
(August 4, 1917 - May 25, 2014)

Dominica Clair “Mickey” Ballengee died at her home on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at the age of 96. Funeral Services will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Saturday May 31, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  Burial will follow at Woodmere Memorial Park.  Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Ferrell-Chambers Funeral Home.  Mickey was born in Somerset, Ohio on August 4, 1917. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1935 and from the Mt. Carmel School of Nursing in Columbus, Ohio as a Registered Nurse in 1938. She joined the US Army as a Second Lieutenant in 1941 and during WWII was stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. There she met and married her husband, Carl B. Ballengee. She and Carl raised six children in Huntington, WV where Mickey continued her lifelong nursing career through her work with neighbors, family, and friends. Mickey was a life-long member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church where she volunteered her time and resources generously. She particularly enjoyed coordinating the parish rummage sale for many years and was always proud of the “found” money it raised.  Growing up on a farm, Mickey stayed true to her roots and always had a garden until she could no more. She was a recycler and environmentalist her whole life, way before it was popular. She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward George and Mildred Burgoon Noll; her husband, Carl Benton Ballengee; a daughter, Carla Lynette Mangers; her brothers Paul, James, Frank, Thomas, and Mark Noll; her sisters, Rita Wallenberg and Mary Rose Smith. She is survived by her children Michael Ballengee (Laura) of Livermore, CA, Richard Ballengee (Nancy) of Houston, TX, James Ballengee (Pat) of Los Angeles, CA, Ann Mellinger of West Palm Beach, FL and Philip Ballengee of Huntington, W. Va. 12 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; her brother Albert Noll of Columbus, OH; her sister Barbara Callahan of Somerset, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Mickey’s name be made to Huntington Hospice or the Native American Indian Foundation, a charity Mickey supported by rolling bandages or sending money during her lifetime. The family would like to thank her long time caregiver, Rachel Fowler and the staff of Huntington Hospice for their kind and exceptional care.
