Obituary

George Hill, Sr.
(January 11, 1925 - August 22, 2015)

George Hill, Sr., 90, formally of Huntington, WV passed away August 22, 2015. George was born in Clinton, SC on January 11, 1925, to the late William and Malinda Irby Hill.  He moved to Huntington, WV in 1945, where he met the love of his life, Eva P. Washington, who later became his wife. George was a faithful member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church while in Huntington. After relocating back to Clinton, SC, he became a member of the Bethlehem Grove Baptist Church where he was also a faithful member.  George retired from American Car and Foundry after 30 years of service. He was a welder building rail cars. He was known to all as “Pa Pa George”. He was a father figure to all the kids on 19th Street & 8th Avenue. He would load them up in his station wagon hauling as many as it would hold taking them to the country for a day away from the city.  He was a very handy with his hands making things out of nothing. It was said, “Give Pa Pa George nothing and he’ll make something”. He never met a stranger and was a friend to all. Pa Pa loved to hunt “where he called the shots.” He panted gardens which he gave away more than he kept. He planted fruit trees “whether you wanted one or not.” He enjoyed cooking, especially collard greens, banana pudding and sweet potato pies.  He was preceded in death by his father, William and mother Malinda Hill; brother, William Thomas (Bell Street) Hill and his wife, Eva P. Irby Hill.  He leaves behind to mourn one sister, Mattie Fuller of Clinton, SC; three sons, George Hill, Jr., David M. (Jamie) Hill and Rev. Reginald (Josette) Hill, all of Huntington. Ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Also surviving, four nieces, two nephews and a very special niece, Mattie (Juicy) Dillard. He always said “You got to have your stuff” and on August 22, 2015 George “Pa Pa” had his stuff!
