RICHARD JAMES MEARS
(June 9, 1938 - December 13, 2010)



Richard James Mears, 72, of Huntington WV died Monday, December 13, 2010 in St. Mary’s Medical Center.  Dick was born June 9, 1938 in Dover, OH, a son of the late Floyd J. Mears and Florence Affolter Mears.  He graduated from Dover High School in 1956 and attended Ohio University. 

In 1958 he began working for F.J. Mears Company and along with his brother, Dave, called on customers in southeastern Ohio and West Virginia.  In 1977 he opened Mears Brokerage Inc. in Huntington and moved his family there.  He was active in various Food Broker and Grocery organizations in Ohio and West Virginia. Included in his 50 year career, Dick served as President of Mears Brokerage Inc. in Huntington, WV and Dover, OH.  He was able to fulfill his passion of selling food products to grocery stores up until earlier this year. 

Dick was preceded in death by his son Todd Mears.  He is survived by his wonderful wife of 49 years Sue, son and daughter-in-law John and Janet Mears and their children Cullen and Meredith of Huntington, WV; his son and daughter-in-law Edward (Ted) and Marcy Mears and their daughter Bethany of St. Cloud, MN; his daughter-in-law Jennifer Mears and her daughter Kristen of Culloden, WV.  He is also survived by his brother and sister-in law David and Kay Mears of Huntington; his sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Ann and James Murphy of Dover, OH; and his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Patrick Petrigan of Vermillion, OH.

A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Huntington, WV.  Visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 prior to the service.  Burial will be on Monday, December 20, 2010 in Dover, OH.

Dick was a very compassionate and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all.  He was a successful businessman being honest and loyal to everyone he served. Dick enjoyed his family, friends and church and had a special relationship with  Pea Ridge Bible Study Group. 

The family especially wishes to give thanks to care givers, Elizabeth McMorrow-Jones, Phyllis Akers, and members of Pea Ridge Bible Study.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the American Heart Association, the Parkinson Disease Foundation, or the First Presbyterian Church of Huntington, WV.

Henson Mortuary, Barboursville is handling all arrangements and caring for the Mears family.
