Billy Joe Holtzworth

Billy Joe “B. J.” Holtzworth, 90, formerly of Huntington, WV, died on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at Holbrook-on-the-Hill Nursing Home in Buckhannon, WV. Born July 14, 1919 in Huntington, WV, he was a son of the late Rudolph Henry and Alice Ingram Holtzworth and step-mother Lillie Tieberman Holtzworth. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Saunders Holtzworth, one brother, Rudolph Henry Holtzworth, Jr. and one sister, Helen Holtzworth Pontius.

He is survived by his daughter, Josette Holtzworth Jones and son-in-law, J. Brooks Jones, of Buckhannon, WV, his son, Jonathan Stephen Holtzworth and daughter-in-law Susan Mole’ Holtzworth, of Tavernier, FL, and by his sister, Charlene Holtzworth Leppert, of Lexington, KY.

He also is survived by granddaughter, Jennifer Jones-Ravich and her husband, Vadim, of Clifton, VA; granddaughter, Janice Jones Landshof and her husband, William, of Hilliard, OH; grandson, Jeffrey Laughlin Jones and his wife, Rayanne, of Breckenridge, CO; and grandson, Ian M Holtzworth of Tavernier, FL. Also surviving are four great-grandsons: Alexander Landshof, Charles Landshof, Wesley Ravich, and Winston Ravich.

For many years, Mr. Holtzworth was employed in the family business, R. H. Holtzworth & Sons Plumbing and Heating Co. He then served as purchasing agent for Huntington Hospital until his retirement in 1984.

He was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church in Huntington, and was a graduate of Huntington High School. He attended Marshall University and graduated from the Wiseman Business School in Huntington. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout and attending the first National Boy Scout Jamboree held in Washington, DC in 1937. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy. He was a 66-year member of the Huntington Elks Lodge No. 313.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at the Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary, 328 6th Avenue in Huntington. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Following the funeral service, burial will be at Woodmere Memorial Park in Huntington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1124 Fifth Ave., Huntington, WV 25701 for Boy Scout Troop No. 7, or to West Virginia Wesleyan College, 59 College Ave., Buckhannon, WV 26201 for the Jones and Holtzworth Family Scholarship Fund for students from Cabell County or Wood County, West Virginia.
