LOUISE MAE BEHN STONE, 92, of
Huntington, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013, in Midland Meadows of Ona. She was
born June 17, 1920, in Rock Island, Ill. She grew up with her younger
brother Walter in Illinois, part of a large German-American family. She
attended Augustana College and earned her nursing degree just before World
War II began. She enlisted in the Army along with a nursing classmate and
was sent to Fort Sam Houston in Texas. There she met her future husband,
John Stone, who was part of a group of
residents in Internal Medicine from Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia.
Together they served in U.S. Army hospitals in North Africa, in Egypt and
later in Morocco. She married John Early Stone,
M.D., in Casablanca in 1945, just before returning home to the U.S.
Louise and John settled in Huntington,
where he practiced medicine. They had three children: daughters, Ann
Louise and Virginia Ellen; and one son,
John Early Jr. She enjoyed music and shared music with friends and family by
playing harmonica, accordion and singing. Louise
volunteered for many years for the American Red Cross Blood Drives. After
her children left home, she managed her husband's medical office until his
retirement. And later, after her husband's death, she spent many winters in
Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., with her classmates from nursing school in Illinois.
She is survived by one daughter, Ann Louise
Stone of Arlington Va. Her husband John and
son John died in 1985, and her daughter, Virginia Ellen, died in 1994. She
is also survived by two granddaughters, Sarah Elizabeth Boyd and Jessica
Early Stone; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Phillips, all of Hurricane W.Va.; and
by four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m.
Wednesday, May 22, 2013, by the Rev. Dr. John Minihan at the First
Presbyterian Church of Huntington. A private interment will follow in
Woodmere Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
