Obituary

Velma Ruth Cecil Garrett, 87, of Huntington, passed from this life on Friday, April 4, 2008 at Hospice House of Huntington, following a short illness.  She was born August 17, 1920 in Tornado, WV, to the late Millard and Laura Woodrum Cecil.  Velma was a faithful member of the Guyandotte Church of Christ.  She became a member of the Guyandotte Church when she arrived in Huntington in 1939.  Upon her arrival in Huntington, she met and fell in love with Ray Douglas Garrett, whom she married on January 15, 1941.  They were married for 55 years before his death.  They had one daughter, Barbara Ann.  She is preceded in death by her husband Ray; all of her siblings including her twin brother, Ralph Cecil, Amplice Cecil, Stella Cecil Spurlock, Pauline Cecil Crouch, Pearl Cecil Bernard, Zella Cecil Pauley, Grace Cecil Bryan, John Cecil, Lester Cecil and Anna Cecil Turley.  She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Cyrus; two granddaughters, Patricia Cyrus Stiltner (Ron) and Susan Cyrus Legg (Earl); three great grandchildren, Meredith Legg, Garrett Legg and Laura Jane Stiltner; nine nieces; four nephews and many great nieces, great nephews and numerous friends.  Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2008 at Beard Mortuary, Huntington.  A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. at the Guyandotte Church of Christ on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 by Minister Willie Purdee.  Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Guyandotte Church of Christ Building Fund or Hospice of Huntington.
