Catherine D. Apel
(May 30, 1925 - December 9, 2009)



Catherine D. Apel, 84, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 9, 2009. Funeral services will be conducted 6:00 pm Monday, December 14, 2009, at Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Rev. R. Kevin Kelly officiating. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold W. "Hal" Apel, former head librarian at Marshall University, on December 9, 1988. Catherine was born May 30, 1925, in Columbus, Ohio, a daughter of the late Judge Frank DeLay and his wife Edyth of Jackson, Ohio. She was a graduate of Maryland College for Women and Drexel Institute of Technology. She was a reference librarian at Miami University (Miami, Ohio) before her marriage and later librarian at Huntington High School for thirty-three years. She retired from HHS in 1989. Mrs. Apel was past president of Alpha Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for key women educators, the first Southwest Regional Director for the state organization, and she was presented Delta Kappa Gamma's state achievement award in 1985. She also held various offices in AAUW, the American Association of University Women. Her brother, Judge Tom DeLay and his wife Lee of Jackson, Ohio, her son John Apel of Huntington, and her dear friend, Ruth Thornton, also of Huntington, survive Cathie. The family wishes to thank Drenda Lambert for her caring help. Friends may call one hour prior to service time Monday at the church.
