(February 15, 1909 - February 5, 2014)

Verona Arker Clarke 104 of Huntington, WV passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2014, Wife of the late Dr. Hannibal D. Clarke. She was preceded in death by her daughter Bobbie Jean Clarke and also two sisters. Verona was born February 15, 1909 in South Carolina. Her family moved to Bluefield, WV where she attended School and Graduated. She was also a graduate of West Virginia State University. Verona met and married the late Dr. Hannibal D. Clarke from this union their daughter Bobbie Jean Clarke was born. She moved to Williamson, WV where she was a Home Economics Teacher for eight years. She retired from teaching to become a full time wife and mother. Verona was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member for a number of years. Verona was active in her community, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Links, Inc. for many years. Verona was the last surviving member of the Dr. Hannibal D. Clarke Scholarship fund at Marshall University. After years of being a wife, mother and active in the community her health began to fail. She was lovingly cared for by her daughter Bobbie Jean Clarke not knowing at that time it would build a warm and loving connection to each other. I love them both with all my heart. I was with them for 11 years and I thank God for giving me that time with them, and being in their life, for the pleasure of caring for them. Thank you to Pernell Dotson a friend who came to visit her on her Birthday, Christmas when he could. He would hold her hand and talk to her, she liked that. Special thanks to the caregivers, who went above and beyond to make sure Verona had the best. Renee, Judy, Sabrina, Shea and Cassandra. Thank you to the members of the Links, Inc, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Rev. Donte’ Jackson, First Baptist Church and Ferrell-Chambers Funeral Home. A celebration of Verona’s life will be 1:00PM Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at the First Baptist Church, with Pastor Donte’ Jackson, officiating. Burial will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park. Friends may call from Noon until the time of the service at the church.
