Elder Sherman Donald McGown
(December 16, 1928 - January 15, 2015)



Elder Sherman D. McGown, 86, of Huntington, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington. Elder McGown was born on December 16, 1928 in Wayne County, WV to the late Delbert McGown and Edna Akers Nelson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Korean War. He was a salesman for Broughton’s Dairy before he retired after 37 years. He was Saved by Grace on December 28, 1952. He was an Elder in the United Baptist Church. Funeral services will be conducted by David Messer on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at 1 pm at the Reger Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Dock’s Creek Cemetery, Kenova. In addition to his parents Elder McGown was also preceded in death by sisters Annabelle Pratt and Polly Thompson and grandsons Travis and Clayton Lucas. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rosella Smith McGown. Children Jennie and Lewis Nelson, Becky and Norman Lucas, Sherman and Julie McGown, Julie and Don Collins, and Sheri McGown. Grandchildren Darron (Kathy) Nelson, Brad (Julie) Nelson, Evan (Kyla) Nelson, Greta (Roger) Sowards, Ashton McGown, Haley McGown, Richard (Bailey) Peyton, Dillon Collins, and Kelli Collins. Great grandchildren Riley Nelson, Garrett Nelson, Lily Sowards and Lucas Sowards. A brother Sam Nelson Jr. and sister Nettie McGown Cole. Friends may call on Sunday, January 18, 2015 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Reger Funeral Home, Huntington. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Navy.
