Lowell E. Perdue, 93 of Huntington passed away Thursday, November 3, 2016 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, November 10 at the Reger Funeral Chapel by Pastor Jamie Gump. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington. He was born Sept. 15, 1923 in Shoals, WV a son of the late Walter and Isabelle Gibson Perdue. He graduated in 1942 from the Ceredo Kenova High School, joined the U.S. Navy and attended the Navy Diesel School in Richmond, VA, after graduating was sent to the Amphibious training base in Little Creek, VA, then to the Navy base in Ft. Pierce, FL, then back to New York for transportation to England for further training on the invasion of France. He was assigned to the USS Joseph T. Dickman (APA-13) for the invasion, he and his crew were transporting soldiers into Utah Beach when they hit a sand bar and couldn’t move, they unloaded the soldiers who sunk with the heavy gear, the 88th infantry division were getting close to them, so the crew split up, he and his coxswain swam ashore and got behind the concrete walls, they were told that a Navy base quarters would be there for them, but after staying on the beach from June 6, 1944 they finally found the headquarters, three miles up the beach about a mile inland, underground, so on July 24, 1944 they got orders to catch the first Landing Ship, Tank going back to England, which they did. After three months orders came through to return to the states, which they did, they caught the Queen Elizabeth in Scotland bound for New York. After a thirty day leave he returned to New York and was sent to San Francisco, CA for the rest of his Navy career. After returning home he was hired as a fireman for the Norfolk and Western Railroad, where he was promoted to engineer after three years. He retired after 38 1/2 years at the age of 60. Memberships include, (Life) United Transportation Union of Cleveland, OH, (Life) Crescent Lodge # 32 AF & AM of Ceredo, WV, Beni Kedem Shrine of Charleston, WV, Huntington Shrine Club, was a 32nd Degree Sottish Rite Mason, El Hasa Shrine of Ashland, KY, a KY Colonel, (Life) American Legion post #93 of Kenova, (Life) VFW Post 1064 of Huntington, Order of the Eastern Star Marcum Chapter # 6 of Ceredo and he received the highest medal that the French gives out and that is the Legion of Honor and was Knighted a Knight in the French Army, for helping to free the French in WWII. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Jeannine Speed Perdue a son John F. Perdue, three brothers, Earl Perdue, Leonard Perdue and Walter M. (Dudy) Perdue. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Valerie Perdue Bias and Mark Bias of Huntington a granddaughter, two grandsons, Darin and Dewayne Perdue, five nieces including a special niece, Joyce Cross, six nephews, and a special friend Rosa Hamilton. Friends may call from 6-8 PM Wednesday, November 9 at the Reger Funeral Home, Huntington. Marcum Chapter # 61 O.E. S of Ceredo will conduct services 7:00 PM at the funeral home. American Legion Post # 93 of Kenova will conduct Military Rites and Crescent Lodge # 32 AF & AM of Ceredo will conduct Masonic Graveside rites.
