Obituary

James Ralph “J.R.” Thompson, 90, of Huntington passed away Friday, November 7, 2008 in St Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington.  Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at Beard Mortuary, Huntington with the Rev. Gordon Humphreys officiating.  Burial will follow in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington.  He was born October 12, 1918 in Riverton, WV, a son of the late James L. and Rhoda Thompson.  He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Dolly Thompson and one grandchild.  J.R. owned and operated Thompson’s TV Service for 40 years and was a member of Beverly Hills Methodist Church.  He was a veteran of WWII, Pacific Theater, 1639th Engr. Batt.  He was a former member of Spring Valley Country Club, Riviera Country Club, East Huntington Kiwanis Club and a charter member of the Tri-State Dulcimer Society.  He graduated from Circleville High School, Pendleton County, WV, Class of 1936 and from Alderson-Broaddus College, Class of 1940 and taught school in Pendleton County for three years.  He was a former member of Electricians Local 317 and was employed as electrician at the Oak Ridge Atomic Energy Plant in TN during the building of the first Atomic Bomb.  He is survived by his wife, Betty Coyle Thompson; one son, James E. Thompson of Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Eloise Jensen of Cincinnati, OH; two stepchildren, Paul Hartley and Sharon Hackworth, both of South Point, OH; four grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.  Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, November 10, 2008 at Beard Mortuary.
