Donald Eugene Maynard

Donald Eugene “Don” Maynard, 52 of
Huntington,
WV passed away on Saturday May 30, 2009 at
St. Mary’s
Medical
Center.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 PM at Beard Mortuary
with Rev. Cledith Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in
Forest
Memorial Park,
Milton,
WV. The Honor Guard from the
Huntington Police Dept. will serve as pallbearers. He
was born January 26, 1957 in
Huntington,
WV. Don was
recently elected as a Magistrate for
Cabell
County he was also a
retired Huntington Police Officer with over 26 years of service. During his
police officer career he was awarded the “Medal of Valor”. The highest decorated
award any law enforcement officer can receive. He was also awarded “Police
Officer of the year” in the state of West Virginia by governor Arch Moore
and “West Virginia Law Enforcement Officer of the year” by the American
Society for Industrial Security the KYOVA Chapter. He coordinated the
Huntington Police Dept. Olympic team and competed in various competitions in
the
USA and other
countries. Track & Field Decathlons and the “Worlds Strongest Cop
Competition” were among his successes while competing. He was involved with
our local school system as a Track and Field and Football coach. He spent
many years as Beverly Hills Middle School Track and Field Coach. He also
coached at
Barboursville
Middle School in the
football program. He affected children in a broad spectrum whether it be in
athletics or as a positive role model. He was instrumental in coordinating
the Marshall University Track & Field Camp and stayed involved for 10 years.
Several hundred middle and high school student athletes attended from WV and
surrounding states. The “Don Maynard Promotions” was a project he began 15
years ago focusing on our youth. He began promoting Rock Music which led to
the opening of an All-Ages Club for youth of all ages to enjoy live music.
Throughout this journey it has generated a positive music scene with young
and old alike. It also opened the door of communication between our youth
and several members of the Huntington Police Department. The money that was
generated from this program Don donated to churches, schools and youth
organizations which gave him great joy. He was preceded in death by his
grandparents, Frank and Sada Maynard and Rollie and Georgie Erwin. Don is
survived by his loving family, including his wife of 30 years, Stephanie
Hinkle Maynard; two sons, Brandon Andrew “Andy” Maynard and Bradley
Alexander “Alex” Maynard and his fiancé, Amanda Moore. He is also survived
by his father and step-mother, Eugene and Phyllis Maynard, his mother,
Juanita Erwin Stanley; step-brothers, Wayne Stanley, Jr. and his wife, Mary;
Mike Stanley and Ronnie Maynard and his wife, Sandy; a sister, Connie Walker
all of Huntington; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kenny and Linda Hinkle;
brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Pam Hinkle of Lesage, WV; his
special friends, Mark Underwood and Ed and Vickie Shaffer; a host of family,
friends and co-workers, and his special dog, “Acie”. The family will receive
friends on Monday from 6-9 PM at Beard Mortuary.
