REV. GAINES E. (BUDDY) SMITH went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 29, 2013. He was born on October 7, 1928, the son of the late Gaines A. and Catherine Childers Smith. He was a clinical associate for Prestera Transition Homes. He also served as former pastor of the Ceredo Christian Baptist Church and has served as an assistant pastor of the First Huntington Christian Baptist Church for several years. Gaines graduated from the WV School for the Blind in Romeny, WV. He was also a member of the Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Bobby Joe, Eugene, Delbert and Jim Smith; and one sister, Thelma Holderby. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mattie Marie Smith; and three sons and their spouses, Alan (Kelley), Otis (Donna), Micheal (Patricia) Smith; one sister, Betty Erwin of Huntington; twelve grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Beard Mortuary, Huntington, with Rev. Richard Maynard officiating. Burial will follow at Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. at the mortuary.
