Obituary

Luther Ray Morgan
(March 7, 1932 - September 5, 2018)


Reverend Luther Ray Morgan, 86, of Huntington, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 and was reunited with his lifelong companion, Beulah, at the front of Heaven’s gate. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Tillman and Virginia Morgan; his step-mother, Russie Morgan and one sister, Judy Mateoski. Luther was a graduate of Huntington East High School and received his divinity degree from The Free Will Baptist Bible College (now Welch College). He was retired from Valley Bell & Borden Dairy where he drove his milk truck through Eastern Cabell and Lincoln Counties serving many schools, grocery stores, and small markets throughout the region. Luther served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a minister of the gospel for over 70 years, starting when he was a teenager. He was the former pastor of Trinity Free Will Baptist Church where he was a loyal member for 40 years. He also pastored numerous other churches throughout Huntington and Charleston. He was the General Board Member to the National Association of Free Will Baptist from West Virginia and also served as the Moderator of the State Association and in numerous capacities for the Brotherhood Conference. He is survived by his four children, Louis Morgan of Barboursville, Martha (Dennis) Cooper of Fuquay-Varina, NC, Amy (Keith) Rose of Wilmington, NC, and Mark (Michelle) Morgan of Barboursville; five grandchildren, Breanne (Corky) Dowdy, Nathan (Jennifer) Cooper, Morgan (Austin) Eaton, and Rachel and Caleb Morgan; two great-grandchildren, Lilly and Spencer Dowdy; two brothers, John Morgan of Martinsburg WV and Morgan Morgan of Cleveland, OH. Over the last twenty years, he was a dedicated member of the Silver Sneakers program at the Phil Cline Family YMCA. He was a daily fixture and will be greatly missed by all those who he encountered, and especially by, Marlene.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Trinity Free Will Baptist Church, 2325 Johnstown Road, Huntington, by Reverends Todd Lovins, Fred Ramey, Ray Williamson and Steve Williams. Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 PM prior to services at the church. Beard Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
